Literature Text

Society decides consciously and subconsciously when something is unusual compared to expected standards, and how it should be addressed according to their culture’s ideas for appropriate reactions. Though there are laws and ethics taught to the modern American citizens, both positive and negative prejudice will always affect our choices whether we wish them to or not. This is not something to be frowned upon because it is only human nature that we attempt to make informed decisions, which must include the individual’s own experiences. It is when human nature also reacts with fear and hostility, instead of an open mind to the new experience, that we view prejudice with contempt. This also is including our own prejudice towards others and ourselves.

From this person’s own personal experience, one should be able to say that persecution of differences does not affect this person negatively anymore. It should be seen as another trial with which to test one’s ego. Now, when mocked or taunted, this person has the ability to see it as a compliment, if necessary. That does not mean that one should ignore all criticism, but rather use it to better one’s self so as to understand one’s ego to the fullest extent. This person sees no point in changing herself when she loves every single unique and quirky characteristic that is her.

Altogether, it can be seen that not all forms of society’s attack are from ill-intentioned citizens, or that they have to be seen in a negative light. One chooses what wants to see. If we see out casting for prejudice’s sake alone, we must try to learn and understand. Our human nature may make this more difficult to do than to say, but this does not mean we should not strive to do so. As one, our goal should be to not see only a mass of numberless humanoid figures scuttling on a habitable planet. We should see large groups of individualistic people who are all unique and different, and by pure luck, have found a place in society in which they feel loved and accepted for those special traits. For that is who we are; we should not lose sight of this, in caution that hatred should consume our very beings.
